BIO
I am a Southern California native and majored in art at the University of Oregon. Later, while living in the Philadelphia area, I continued studying figure drawing and oil painting through classes at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and studio workshops with renowned artist Paul Gorka.
I now live near Atlanta, Georgia, where I spent more than twenty years working as a graphic designer, primarily in the tennis industry. Although my career temporarily took me in a different creative direction, it was always my ultimate goal to paint again. After years of detours, I returned to painting in 2022.
Today, painting is my passion. I love the process of transforming my own vision of familiar surroundings and moments of everyday life onto canvas through a vibrant color palette.
My work has been featured in and recognized with awards in juried exhibitions and is held in private collections.
Statement & Process
My paintings are snapshots of what I see every day. They are images that trigger my imagination and inspire me to bring a blank canvas to life - expressing my vision of familiar subjects. I transform these images through the energy and rhythm of color, in a way that reflects how I want them to be seen and experienced.
Planning is the foundation of my process. A source photo is my starting point and Photoshop is my digital sketchbook where I experiment with composition – cropping, removing unnecessary parts, sometimes adding a new element.
The fun begins with vibrant, saturated color combinations as I challenge or rearrange the original colors of my subjects.
Acrylic on canvas is my medium of choice. I begin with an underpainting, usually brilliant red/orange and intentionally allow bits of it to peak through in the final image.
Every day I see inspiration for a new painting and every new painting is an exciting adventure to share. My greatest joy is a smile, a nod of recognition or emotional connection from a viewer.
“What an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something, because of course art is about sharing; you wouldn’t be an artist unless you wanted to share an experience, a thought.” - David Hockney
